Short but sweet.
That’s my motto when it comes to “reframing” language ππͺ
We all have those terrible thoughts from our Inner Critic:
π© You’re not good enough/ not clever enough
π© They all think you’re useless
π© You are a failure (that was always mine… π)
And we usually get the same ones, repeated! π
When I’m working with clients, I like to help them find positive things to say to themselves when these thoughts intrude π€
The temptation is go into a long, complex speech (partly to help persuade yourself!).
But actually, the most effective response is something simple, direct – and that can be easily repeated πͺ
Because that’s the key to success:
β¨ with the power of neuroplasticity, every time you challenge these unhelpful thoughts you are re-wiring your neural pathways AWAY from them, and choosing to replace them with something more empowering instead.
It’s no good if you can’t quite remember what that empowering thing is! π
The one I’ve traditionally used for myself is “you’ve got this!”.
I have found this covers most eventualities, and its enthusiasm & energy really works for me ππ₯
But recently, with the ongoing challenge of trying to juggle family health stuff with work, life, being a mum & wife – you know, the usual…
… I’ve been finding something else more helpful.
And that is: “you are doing the best you can” ππͺ
πͺ Am I managing to watch every hockey match? No – but I’m doing the best I can…
πͺ Am I replying to every single email within 24 hours? No – but I’m doing the best I can…
πͺ Am I creating a culinary masterpiece each night? No – but I’m doing the best I can…
And do you know what – that’s good enough π₯°
So this week have a think about what your helpful, empowering phrase is ππ§‘πͺ
π€ If you have had one before, consider, would it benefit from a tweak to take account of where your life/ work is now?
π€ And if you haven’t had one before, create one! But remember – short but sweet is the goal.
Wishing you a positive, productive, and SHORT-BUT-SWEET-EMPOWERMENT-filled week! ππ₯πͺ
with much love ππ§‘
